A Taiwan-HK-Chinese, born and educated in Hong Kong. A smoker since 1992. A name listed in the Marquis Who's Who in the World, 2000 edition. Moved to Taichung Taiwan on Feburary 14, 2005 and got Taiwan citizenship on August 1, 2007. An IEEE Senior Member, affiliated in the Computational Intelligence Society and the Systems, Man & Cybernetics Society. A governing broad member of Asia Pacific Neural Network Assembly (APNNA) (currently Asia Pacific Neural Network Society) from 2009 to 2015. An associate editor of the International Journal of Computers and Applications during 2005 and 2009. A guest editor of Neural Computing and Applications and Neural Processing Letters.

Love to do research and compile research papers. Some papers appear in the journals, like Applied Soft Computing, IET Electronics Letters, IEEE Access, IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems (formerly IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks), IEEE Transactions on Parallel & Distributed Systems, International Journal of Electronic Business, Neural Computation, Neural Computing and Applications, Neural Networks, Neural Processing Letters, Neurocomputing and Supercomputing.

A student software trainee (under the placement program mandated to the students in the Department of Electronic Engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic), from September 1990 to August 1991, in the Department of Management Information Services of the Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) Hong Kong. A graduate assistant, from September 1992 to August 1998, in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. A post-doc teaching fellow, from September 1998 to Mid-March 2000, in the Department of Computer Science at the Hong Kong Baptist University. A lecturer, from Mid-March 2000 to August 2000, in the School of Science & Technology at the Open University of Hong Kong, currently the Hong Kong Metropolitan University. An adjunct associate professor of the Institute of Software at the Chinese Academy of Science, Beijing China, during 1999 and 2002. An assistant professor, from September 2000 to August 2004, in the Department of Computing at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. A senior reserch assistant, from October 2004 to January 2005, in the Department of Electronic Engineering at the City University of Hong Kong. An assistant professor, from February 2005 to July 2007, in the Department of Information Management (currently the Department of Medical Informatics) at the Chung Shan Medical University. An assistant professor, August 2007 to July 2009, in the Institute of Electronic Commerce (IEC) at the National Chung Hsing University. An associate professor, from August 2009 to January 2015, in the Institute of Technology Management (ITM) at the National Chung Hsing University (after the merge of IEC and ITM). Starting from Feburary 2015, John Sum has been a full professor in the same institute. In between August 2018 and July 2020, John Sum was luckily awarded a two-year contract (with pay raise) as a distinguished professor.

BEng (Hons) in Electronic Engineering (1992) from the Hong Kong Polytechnic, currently Hong Kong Polytechnic Unviersity. MPhil (1995) and PhD (1998) in CSE from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. A teacher since September 1998, specializing in Introduction to Computer Science, EC Websites Development, Evolution of Principles of Management, Service Systems Engineering, Neural Computation, Electronic Commerce, Research Method and Thesis Writing, with experience in teaching courses for students from different levels of programs (inlcuding diploma, higher diploma, bachelor, master and doctoral programs) and students from different schools (particularly engineering, management and textile). A visitor of the Griffith University in Australia (1998), the Institute of Software, Chinese Academy of Science, Beijing China (1999-2002), the Florida Atlantic University in US (2001), the City University of Hong Kong (2004-), the Ching Mai University in Thailand (2009), the Majeo University in Thailand (2009).

Able to speak Cantonese (for sure), Mandarin (so-so) and English (ok). Able to read/write Chinese (traditional and some simplified) and English. Do not know any Chinese input method, and have no plan to learn!
